SHIPPING GOODS WITH LITHIUM BATTERIES
Management of Shipments with Lithium Batteries
Following strong suspicions that the self-combustion of lithium battery loads is the cause of some air incidents, since January 1st, 2015, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the international organization regulating air transport standards, has issued new and more restrictive rules regarding the transport of lithium batteries. These rules impose strict requirements for handling, preparation, packaging, and labeling of lithium batteries and cells carried aboard aircraft (similar rules are valid for road, rail, and sea transport).
Lithium batteries (or cells), used to power a wide range of electronic devices, are considered hazardous goods because they can cause overheating and fires under certain conditions. Being a source of combustible and concentrated energy, a lithium battery can cause a violent flame if used incorrectly and its safety and protection circuits are disabled or defective.
According to the provisions of IATA, among other things, it is prohibited to transport lithium or lithium-ion cells or batteries for electronic devices in checked baggage, but they can only be transported in carry-on baggage and for a maximum of two (to avoid short circuits, such batteries must be individually isolated).
For greater clarity, IATA has published guidelines that establish the correct methods of packaging and transporting lithium batteries (Lithium Battery Guidance Document - www.iata.org).
